Wither Skeleton Basics
Wither skeletons spawn in nether fortresses, 2.5 blocks tall. Skull drop: 2.5% base (Looting adds 1%/level), Looting III = 5.5%. Need 3 skulls for Wither. Key: isolate from blazes, piglins, and regular skeletons.
Arrange four soul sand blocks into a T lying on the ground — three across the bottom and one stacked on the middle — then place a wither skeleton skull on each of the three upper positions. Nothing happens until a player places the last skull by hand, so dispensers cannot summon it. Spawn it in a bedrock chamber or at the bedrock layer: the wither destroys almost every other block, becomes armoured below half health, and spends its first ten seconds charging while invulnerable.
Fortress Modification
Cover fortress crossroads floor with slabs (limits other spawns). Keep 3-high spaces for wither skeletons. Dig 2-deep trench — stand inside, 2.5-tall skeletons walk in but can't hit you. Kill with Looting III sword. 10-30 skulls/hour.
Tip: Slab floors suppress other spawns without raising light level — wither skeletons need light <7. Most critical technique.
Wither Rose Trap
Wither roses (dropped when Wither kills non-undead mob) planted on ground deal wither damage. Cover fortress crossroads with wither roses — skeletons take damage walking over them, you just finish them off. Doubles efficiency with Looting III.
