What Iris Is (and OptiFine's Role)
Iris is the modern shader loader for Fabric. Same job as OptiFine's shaders, better architecture: 1) built on Sodium's pipeline — 30-50% higher FPS than OptiFine with shaders; 2) compatible with most OptiFine-format packs; 3) supports shaderpack stacking (merging options from two packs). Verdict: Fabric players use Iris; Forge players use OptiFine or Oculus (Iris's Forge port).
Install in Five Steps (Fabric)
1) Install Fabric Loader (see our loader comparison); 2) drop the Sodium + Iris jars into mods (both from Modrinth, matching your game version); 3) put a shaderpack (.zip, unextracted) into .minecraft/shaderpacks/; 4) in game: Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs, select and load; 5) confirm water reflections and leaf shadows in-world. Done.
Tuning Shader Options
Good packs ship an options menu (Video Settings → Shader Pack → Configure). Tune these three first: 1) shadow quality/resolution — the #1 FPS killer; dropping 1024 to 512 gains 20-30%; 2) cloud shadows and volumetric light — gorgeous but expensive, off on low-end; 3) water and fog — cheap and dramatic, keep them. Starter combos: Complementary Unbound (low preset) on low-end, BSL standard mid-range, full Continuum/SEUS on high-end.
Quick Troubleshooting
Black screen → check Sodium, Iris, and the pack target the same game version; crash on world load → usually a pack/Iris version mismatch, update Iris or switch packs; no water reflections → the pack didn't load, look for the green checkmark in the shader UI; FPS lower than before → confirm Iris (not OptiFine) is loading the pack — running both conflicts — and drop shadow resolution.
