What's New in 2.3

Distant Horizons renders the world beyond your render distance as low-detail LOD terrain, making a 32-chunk world look like 512. Version 2.3 brings three upgrades: 1) official 1.22.2 support; 2) normal mapping for LOD textures — distant mountains now catch sunrise light properly; 3) a rewritten shader-compat layer that stops flickering during low-altitude flights.

Performance Benchmarks

Test data (RTX 3060 / 16GB RAM): at a true 128-chunk render distance the game crawls at 25-30 FPS; with DH LOD at 128 it holds a smooth 90+ — baked LOD data is far cheaper to render than real chunks. The best value combo today: vanilla 32 chunks + DH at 256 for 'see far, run fast'.

Install Tips

DH is standalone — no dependencies. With Sodium/Iris, load DH before Iris. LODs generate over time when you first enter a world; AFK and wait, or use DH's offline generator to pre-bake your usual areas. Server players: DH renders from client-side cache, so vanilla servers work too (installing the server-side support adds even more data).

Warning: LOD data eats disk space (~2-4GB per world at 256 chunks). Plan your SSD space before committing.
