Water Maximization & the 9×9 Classic

One water block hydrates farmland within 4 blocks (Manhattan distance, diagonals included). A 9×9 field with water in the center = all 80 farmland blocks hydrated — the highest water-to-crop ratio in the game. Build it: dig a 9×9 area → keep the center block as water (cover it with a slab so you or mobs don't fall in) → place glowstone/lanterns in the 4 corners → hoe the other 80 blocks.

Dig a 9×9 area, leave the center block as water (cover it with a slab so you don't fall in), place lights in the 4 corners — a compact 80-block farm that works day and night.
Warning: Lighting is critical! Crops stop growing below light level 9. Glowstone/lanterns above sea level keep crops growing at night — one per corner is enough.

Crop Spacing & Planting Conditions

Whether a crop can be automated — and how — depends entirely on where it grows and what neighbors it needs. One table covers every common crop:

CropPlantingSpecial RequirementsAuto-Farm Fit
Wheat / Carrots / PotatoesFarmland, adjacent to waterDry farmland reverts to dirt and drops the cropFarmer villager farm (best; ~500–800/hour)

Stacked Farms: Why 3-Block Gaps

Stack 9×9 platforms vertically — each layer is a self-contained unit (center water + corner lights) — and a tiny footprint yields hundreds of farm blocks. The 3-block gap is optimal for three reasons: ① Movement — the player is 1.8 blocks tall, so 2 blocks of headroom are needed to walk; 3 leaves space for ladders/stairs. ② Lighting — glowstone/lanterns mount on the upper platform's underside, and the gap must fit them so light reaches the layer below. ③ Redstone — pistons, dust and levers all tuck into the gap in semi-auto designs.

Warning: Mind the 8-block water limit: one water source flows 7 blocks (8 including the source). A 9-wide field can't be covered by a single-side water stream — either make the field ≤8 wide or flood from both sides. The most overlooked scaling constraint in stacked farms.

Auto-Harvest Designs

Semi-auto: dig a 1-wide channel along one side of the field and block the water with a piston. Flip the lever → water rushes 7 blocks and sweeps every ripe crop into a hopper at the end → chest. Flip again to drain, re-hoe and replant. Full auto: trap a farmer villager in a 1×1 pit at the center of the 9×9 (glass walls). It plants and harvests the entire field; dropped food falls below, where a patrolling minecart hopper catches it and feeds a hopper chain into a chest.

Warning: Add a composter beside the farm — excess seeds become bone meal, which grows more crops. Closed-loop farm!
