Breeding Mechanics
Villager breeding needs three things: 1) One bed per adult villager (plus an extra bed for the baby). 2) Enough food (3 bread, or 12 carrots/potatoes/beetroot). 3) 'Willingness' — villagers gain it after eating. When conditions are met, two nearby villagers show hearts and produce a baby.
Villagers only breed when three things are true at once: both adults are willing (feed each of them twelve carrots, bread or beetroot), at least one bed is unclaimed and reachable, and there are two clear blocks above that bed for the baby. Move the babies away through a one-block hole so they never claim the spare beds, and the breeder keeps running indefinitely — one pair can breed again every five minutes.
Tip: Food is the key. A carrot farm can infinitely feed a breeder — far more efficient than manual bread feeding.
Build Steps
Standard design: 1) Build a 3x3 enclosed breeding room with 3 beds (2 adults + 1 baby). 2) Farm above, farmer villager auto-harvests and feeds villagers below. 3) Babies find and hop onto beds (1 block up, trapdoor guide). 4) Grown babies auto-flushed out by water. 5) Collection via hoppers/minecarts or water flow.
Warning: Bed-villager matching is a common pitfall: breeding stops if villagers can't find empty beds. Keep beds ≥ villagers + 1.
Food Automation
The most stable food source is a carrot farm: a farmer villager auto-plants and harvests in a 9x9 field, excess carrots fed to breeder villagers. No manual intervention needed. Beetroot and potatoes work too, but carrots have the highest yield. One 9x9 carrot farm sustains 4-6 villagers' continuous breeding.
