Three Underwater Challenges
Underwater building is hard for three reasons: breathing (constant air need), water flow (floods as you dig), visibility (low). Breathing via Water Breathing potion, Turtle Shell (+10s), or Conduit (infinite in range + night vision); flow via drainage (table below); visibility via Night Vision potion. Drain first, then the showpiece glass dome.
Drainage Methods
Three drainage methods for different situations:
| Method | Principle | Scale | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sand / gravel fill | Fill solid, then mine out — sand displaced the water | Any large space | Medium |
| Sponge | 5×5 cells, one sponge per cell center | Medium–large | Fast |
| Door trick | A door creates air blocks | 3×3 or smaller | Slow, zero cost |
Glass Dome Construction
A glass dome is the most photogenic underwater form. Steps: build a hemisphere dirt/sand template → place glass against its outside → remove interior dirt → sponge-drain the inside. Recommended 12–15 block diameter (living + bedroom + enchanting); past 20, split into smaller domes joined by glass tunnels. The cross-section shows the dome, conduit placement and the water elevator to the surface dock.
Interior Design
Go for an 'underwater palace': prismarine floor (a conduit byproduct), quartz walls, sea lantern 'skylights' in the ceiling, an activated conduit at the center. Glass walls get trapdoor+fence window frames. Entrance: a water elevator (soul sand bubble column) from seabed to surface dock — swim in and out. For the redstone, see our redstone basics.
