Taming Overview
Minecraft has 12 tamable mobs in three categories: Mounts (horse, donkey, mule, skeleton horse, llama, camel), Pets (wolf/dog, cat, parrot), Utility (snow golem, iron golem). Each has unique taming methods and uses.
Horses, Donkeys & Mules: Taming & Breeding
Right-click a horse empty-handed to mount — it will buck you off. Repeat until hearts appear (3-8 attempts). Once tamed, equip a saddle to control movement. Horse stats are random: 15-30 HP, 4.7-14.2 m/s speed, 1.0-5.5 block jump height. Breed with golden apples/carrots.
Wolves/Dogs: Taming & Uses
Feed bones (from skeletons) to wild wolves. ~33% success rate per bone (1-5 bones typically). Tamed wolves show a red collar and sit on command. They attack what you attack AND what attacks you. Feed any meat to heal (tail angle shows HP). Breed two tamed wolves with any meat.
Cats: Taming & Functions
Cats spawn near villages and witch huts. Feed raw salmon/cod until collared. Tamed cats bring gifts — each morning they may drop string, rabbit foot, feather, raw chicken, or phantom membrane. Critical: cats repel creepers and phantoms within 6 blocks. 11 color variants available.
Parrots: Taming
Parrots spawn in jungle biomes. Feed any seed (wheat/pumpkin/melon/beetroot) until hearts appear. Tamed parrots sit on your shoulder (max 2). They mimic nearby mob sounds — natural danger warning! Right-click to sit. DO NOT feed cookies — chocolate kills parrots instantly.
Llamas & Wandering Trader Llamas
Wild llamas spawn in savanna and mountains. Mount repeatedly to tame (like horses). Equip carpets for decoration (11 colors). Equip chests (3-15 slots based on strength). Most useful: caravan feature — lead one llama and nearby untethered llamas (within 10 blocks) follow in a line (max 10). Llamas spit at wolves that attack them.
