Where Geodes Spawn

An Amethyst Geode is a sphere wrapped in smooth basalt, spawning below roughly Y=30 (any level under sea level) with about a 1-in-24 chance per chunk. Three field clues: 1) small amethyst shard fragments occasionally visible on the surface; 2) the crisp crystal chime while mining underground; 3) smooth basalt exposed in mineshaft or cave walls — that's the geode shell. Dig in.

Mining Rules

Amethyst grows through four stages: bud (unmineable), small, medium, and the final Amethyst Cluster — only the last stage is harvestable. Clusters drop 4 shards and require an iron pickaxe or better. Key rules: 1) Fortune yields up to 16 shards (Fortune III averages ~10); 2) Silk Touch only grabs decorative bud blocks — not worth it; 3) jumping or water currents shatter clusters — watch your footing.

Tip: Mine clusters from the side, never stand on top; the 'drop buds' behavior also lets you collect mid-stage buds as decor blocks.

Farming Amethyst

Amethyst only grows on Budding Amethyst blocks — pale purple with crack marks. Buds on their faces randomly grow into harvestable clusters and regrow after harvesting. Budding amethyst can't be crafted or Silk-Touched away, so farms must be built inside a full geode. Standard farm: preserve every budding block, scaffold around them for access, and run water channels at the entrance to collect shards. Expect ~1 harvestable cluster per budding block every 25 minutes.

Recipe Cheat Sheet

Four main uses for shards: Spyglass (1 shard + 2 copper — exploration essential), Tinted Glass (4 shards + 1 glass — blocks beacon beams and light pollution), decorative blocks, and plain Amethyst Blocks (4 shards, pure building material). 1.22 added new uses for 'amethyst dust' in bamboo-biome recipes.
