Crafting Recipe

8 planks in a ring around 1 wooden slab (any wood) = 1 barrel. Plank types mix freely.

vs Chest

Same 27 slots, but a barrel is a full block: sits flush against walls, and barrels stack side by side with no gaps — chests need spacing. Crucially, hoppers and comparators read it without anyone opening it, so enclosed automation just works.

Pro Tips

A chest blocked by a solid block above goes dead to hoppers; a barrel doesn't — hence dense barrel walls in underground storerooms. Pair with comparators for fill-level sorting and low-stock alarms.
