Crafting Recipe
Row 1: 3 wool (same color). Row 2: 3 planks (any type). Bed color = wool color (16 options). White bed + dye = colored bed.
Three Functions
1. Set spawn: right-click to sleep (works daytime). 2. Skip night: sleeping skips to morning (multiplayer requires all players). 3. Prevent phantoms: after 3 game days (72 min) without sleep, phantoms attack. One sleep resets.
Beds in Nether/End
CRITICAL: never right-click a bed in Nether or End! 'Sleeping' = massive explosion (stronger than TNT). Exploit: use beds at Y=15 in Nether to clear netherrack and expose Ancient Debris — the 'bed mining' technique. Always wear Blast Protection IV.
Core Functions
Beds do two things: skip the night straight to morning, and set your spawn point (you respawn at the bed after death, provided it is not destroyed or blocked). On multiplayer servers, night skips once all players are in bed.
Danger & Clever Uses
Using a bed in the Nether or the End causes an immediate, powerful explosion with fire — which is exactly why bed-bombing the Ender Dragon is a standard speedrun tactic, dealing far more damage per hit than a diamond sword. Beds can be dyed in 16 colours, making them cheap decoration.
