Crafting Recipe

3 planks (top) + 4 cobblestone (middle row + bottom left+right) + 1 iron (bottom center) + 1 redstone (very bottom center) = 1 piston. Pushes up to 12 blocks forward when powered. Core component of redstone automation.

How It Works

A piston extends one block when powered (up to 12 in a chain) and does not retract when unpowered. It is the basis of automatic doors, hidden entrances, flying machines and mining rigs.

Practical Uses

Common builds: piston doors (2x2 hidden), auto sugar-cane and pumpkin farms (pushing crops to break them), item elevators and block swappers. Pistons cannot push containers like chests, furnaces or enchanting tables.
