2 planks (top+center) + 1 stick (bottom center) = 1 wooden sword. 4 attack damage (2 hearts). Upgrade to stone sword ASAP (2 cobblestone+1 stick, 5 damage).

Role

A wooden sword deals 4 damage — the fastest self-defence weapon available (bare fists deal 1). Its 59 durability kills roughly 8-10 zombies, enough to survive night one.

Combat Tips

Critical hits: attack while falling after a jump for 1.5x damage, so a wooden sword crits for 6 and kills a zombie in two hits. Without a sword, hole up in a sealed shelter until dawn rather than fighting.
